John Cena finds himself in the midst of an apocalypse, playing a bodyguard for a lottery winner who must stay alive until the end of the day to claim their reward.
The new Amazon movie, aptly titled “Jackpot!”, launches today and centres around Cena’s character, who is hired as a bodyguard for a lottery winner in a dystopian future.
Set in post-apocalyptic California, where the state’s economy is in catastrophic decline, the lottery is used both as a carrot and a stick to prevent a popular uprising, while also providing entertainment for those who didn’t win the jackpot. However, there are a few significant caveats.
John Cena’s Mission: Keep the Lottery Winner Alive
The rules of the game are simple enough: be selected as the jackpot winner and then survive. People across California are encouraged to kill the winner with no consequences and claim the ticket as their own.
To ensure that people are motivated to kill, the lottery itself mirrors Powerball and Mega Millions by offering multimillion-dollar prizes, sometimes even exceeding a billion. However, collecting the prize depends on surviving until sundown and presenting your ticket at the lottery headquarters.
Cena’s character is promised a 10% cut if he successfully protects his charge, an Asian woman portrayed by American actress and comedian Awkwafina.
Lightening the Mood with Stylish Cinematography
Though the movie is set against a bleak backdrop, it adopts a surprisingly light-hearted approach to the apocalypse, reminiscent of the tone seen in Amazon’s Fallout series.
While winning the lottery might seem like a good idea, the astronomical odds – and the even slimmer chances of surviving – warrant careful consideration. For many, the question isn’t just whether you want to win, but whether you want to survive long enough to enjoy it.
Oh, and while the lottery plays a central role in the movie, a promotional campaign has also been launched, offering fans the chance to enter a sweepstakes contest that could win them $5,000 worth of Buffalo Wild Wings gift cards.
