Light & Wonder brings Thunder Drums Leaping Lions online with Lightning Box
Light & Wonder has launched an online adaptation of its land-based slot Thunder Drums Leaping Lions, developed with studio Lightning Box, debuting exclusively with DraftKings in three North American markets.
Light & Wonder, Inc. (NASDAQ: LNW) has released Thunder Drums Leaping Lions online, an adaptation of a land-based slot title developed in partnership with specialist studio Lightning Box.
The game, announced on 5 March 2025 from Las Vegas, brings an Asian-themed design featuring temple imagery and dramatic skies to a digital audience. It runs on a 3x5 reel grid with 243 ways to win.
Persistence mechanics and jackpots
Central to the gameplay is a 3 Pot Persistence mechanic, in which Red, Green and Blue Scatter Coins correspond to three thunder drums displayed at the top of the screen. Each colour unlocks a different feature.
Landing five or more Gold Coins triggers a Free Games feature, with the respin counter reset to three whenever a Scattered Gold Drum appears. If a Blue or Green Coin lands alongside five Gold Coins, a Thunder Prize is added at the start of the feature.
A Bonus Feature can be triggered by one or more Red Coins, with players picking symbols to reveal one of four jackpots: Mini, Minor, Major or Grand. Matching three multi-coloured Bolts upgrades jackpot prizes, while four multi-coloured Bolts award a Double Grand jackpot.
The title also includes expanding wilds, with jackpot payouts reaching up to 5,000x. It is currently available exclusively through DraftKings in New Jersey, Michigan and Ontario.
Industry comment
Michael Maokhamphiou, Operations Manager at Lightning Box, said the game combines immersive visuals with innovative gameplay mechanics, adding that players would enjoy the persistence pots and the possibilities unlocked with each spin.
Rob Procter, VP of Game Development at Light & Wonder, said adapting a popular land-based title for online audiences was an exciting challenge, and that the online version captures what made the original successful. He said the company expects the feature-rich title to appeal to both operators and players.
